Bravo? I think that’s a really shitty derail and epic missing the point made by clueless white folks who want to put POC with legitimate gripes about Halloween blackface and nativewear and geisha-wear and similar fuckery In Their Place. It’s mocking a real complaint, trivializing POC who dared to speak out. Not funny at all.
It was bound to happen and I immediately had several variations pop up into my mind when I first saw these:
The tone and simplicity of the original ads made it PERFECT for parody purposes. I understand your view on the matter, but I just don’t have that kind of reaction to the internet making dumb versions of it.
Then again, I’m a goddamn adult that completely understands the concept of perpetrating prejudices with your terrible Halloween costume choices, so I always kinda roll my eyes whenever I see people preaching out against this. You want to wear blackface? Go right ahead, be as offensive as you want to be. No one on this planet has a right to not be offended, so strap on some fake bombs on your chest and claim to be a Muslim terrorist. These ads shouldn’t stop you.
However, when you put your sombrero on, walk around with a fake tequila bottle, and apply a ridiculous fake moustache to your face, just remember that you invite all the negative criticism and anger towards you from your peers.
Personally, I’d rather spend months piecing together a perfect Hulk Hogan costume than putting on a $10 Indian Savage costume from Spencers Gifts.
