Who's my favorite X-Men character? Easy... Fantomex. Any given original Grant Morrison character > any given Claremont character.
As a child, the tightly wound leader of the X-Men just seemed cooler to me. I could see the badassery of characters like Wolverine or Gambit, but Cyclops was above them in rank. When things went to hell, he was the one giving the orders.
Plus, Scott Summers is written as a complete genius when it comes planning battle tactics and geometry (the guy can hit anyone at any angle with his optic blasts due to his knowledge of math) despite being mentally handicapped. Cyke suffered brain damage whenever he parachuted out of his father’s burning airplane and STILL managed to hook up with the hottest redhead and blonde in the Marvel Universe!
